When you become a self-published author, you will soon learn how important a press kit is to your success. A press kit is an organized package of promotional material that you can send to the media or anyone else that wants more information about you and your book.
However, a press kit isn’t only for the media’s use, your press kit can also be asked for by retailers, book bloggers, event planners, editors and anyone else who might take an interest in you as an author and in your book.
I’ve found that a press release needs to consist of a couple of key parts:
The Author’s Bio and Contact Info
Your author bio should already be written and available to send to anyone who asks. If not, this should be the first thing you work on.
Press Release
A press release should be all about your new book. You need to make sure that it will grab your reader’s attention and hold on tight. One page will work, but make sure you include all noteworthy info about you upcoming book without adding any dated information such as upcoming events.
Author Question and Answer
Include a list of questions you anticipate you would be asked in an interview along with your responses to them. These can include questions about your background, your inspiration for the book and why you decided to self-publish.
Targeted Information about Your Book
Several books are published every year. Here is the place for you to tell your audience why your book makes a difference and stands out in the crowd. You should describe your book and include its unique features and individuality. Include the reason you wrote the book and how reading your book will benefit the reader. Tell people why they will enjoy your book in comparison to any other books that share the same genre or theme.
The press kit is a strong tool and when you add forethought and write it carefully, it will serve you well.
